Tell the Lamar Township Volunteer Fire Company to stop their cruel predator hunt!
Recently, the Fire Company posted on their Facebook page about an upcoming predator hunt fundraiser they will be holding on February 16, 17, and 18, 2024 to raise money. Responses to this Facebook post have been filled with anger and outcry, with many of us upset that this organization is choosing to make fun of killing innocent animals when there are plenty of alternative, humane ways to raise money.
Unfortunately, these kinds of Wildlife Killing Contests are a big problem in Pennsylvania. They are brutal and unsportsmanlike, even in the eyes of most hunters. Animals like coyotes, foxes, raccoons, and even opossums are killed en masse without regard to ethical hunting procedures. The bodies of the animals are usually dumped like garbage once the prizes are awarded.
Our Pennsylvania Wildlife doesn't deserve this kind of cruel, inhumane treatment. Please stand up for them today and tell the Lamar Township Fire Company to stop this heinous event.

I have been reading through your messages about how these contests hurt our local ecosystem and I am overwhelmed by the compassion you all feel for these animals. I am currently working to get a sit-down conversation with the fire company leadership to show them that this fundraiser does not align with the values of our community.

Seeing this kind of momentum means everything to me because I know the local wildlife has friends who refuse to be silent. It is honestly overwhelming to realize that so many people care about this issue just as much as I do.

I have worked in law enforcement for the past 30 years. I have handled countless cases of animal neglect and abuse in Pittsburgh. I am shocked, disappointed, and horrified that Lamar Township Volunteer Fire Company would sponsor a fundraiser by allowing people to kill animals. What is wrong with you? Truly, shame on all of you!
Are we still doing this in an evolved society? And as a fundraiser for the Fire Department? There are many ways to raise money that do not include grossly offending a majority of residents and treating wildlife so horribly. This is shameful.
As a wildlife biologist in a state that banned these unscientific and indefensible contests, I wholeheartedly support bans on these contests everywhere. Nonlethal prevention is the only way to address potential human-wildlife conflict. Furbearer species self-regulate based on their food sources, predators, competitors and other ecological factors.
Stop this! It’s nuts! Opossums?? I can’t believe it, this innocent little critter and America’s only marsupial. They are a gardener’s best friend, love eating ticks whose elimination saves you from nasty diseases. Leave the other animals on your list alone as well. I don’t understand those killing sprees , it’s uncivilized.
Killing contests are driven by the mistaken idea that coyotes 'need' to be hunted. They most assuredly do not. In PA, coyotes are needed to help control deer, slow the spread of Lyme and take out infected deer from the population.
This is a disgrace.
There are more humane ways to raise money.

What a shameful black eye upon both Firefighters and PA. I own a wildlife control company. I must have smarter people as customers because none of them support this stupid approach - and, we all equally own our wildlife. This approach doesn't work.
