Recently Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council approved a change to Sandycove Green, where the wider part of the footpath facing Newtownsmith will now be used for car parking.

To do this they will have to demolish the current wall and significantly widen the existing path so it can accomodate cars and also a new inner footpath, seriously reducing the size of the green itself.

Adding these spaces will only benefit a few local residents who have persistently lobbied the council, despite the limited resources available in this economic climate, and despite the fact that the money could be much better spent restoring the local baths - or for any number of more worthwhile purposes.

The green is a public amenity and should be available to all for recreation, sport, and of course the various fairs, markets and festivals that are staged throughout the year. These events bring in valuable revenue to the area and add to Sandycove's reputation as a local beauty spot.

If you agree that the green should be protected from this and also future development please sign this petition - let your voice be heard!

Thanks! Lou :-)

Seeing the community rally around this slice of green has been deeply moving. I grew up playing on that grass and knowing others feel its value just as strongly gives me so much hope for our next steps.

Who actually asked for this?? Total waste of taxpayer money when the area is falling apart in other places.

This is absolute madness. Why are they trying to ruin the best part of the seafront for a handful of parking spots? Leave the green alone!

Ridiculous decision. We need green spaces for our kids not more tarmac for cars. FIX THE BATHS INSTEAD.

Stop the destruction. Once it's gone it's gone forever.

Keep our green space public. Sandycove is lovely as it is and doesn't need to be turned into a car park.

Used to play here all the time growing up. Breaks my heart to see them trying to bulldoze it.
