Nalcor Energy, the province's energy corporation, has filed applications for review of a proposed plan to route hydro lines through Gros Morne National Park. These massive structures would carry power from the proposed Lower Churchill hydroelectric project in Labrador across the island portion of the province. An alternate plan which would see the transmission lines follow the eastern side of the Northern Peninsula is also being considered. Nalcor Energy has said in local media that it is not sure if this alternate route, which would see transmission lines cross the Long Range Mountains is technically feasible. According to other media sources the alternative route in question was surveyed and cut in 1970 for the proposed island transmission of Lower Churchill power. Nalcor Energy has already entered into discussions with Parks Canada about the Gros Morne route. This route would certainly be a cheaper option for the government and this is certainly the main reason for the now, "impossible" alternative routes. While only early in discussions, now is the time to let the government know that a new massive transmission line cutting through Gros Morne National Park would be a terrible mistake. The environmental and visual integrity of the park would be damaged forever. This would have disastrous consequences for the local economy which relies on the tourism industry to survive.
