'In just five short years, the MFA in Creative Writing at City University has established itself as a beacon for the promotion of the arts and literature, not just in Hong Kong but across Asia and beyond. Today, it is home to a flourishing global community of writers thanks to its unique position in the world, serving as a bridge between West and East in terms of the most important asset of the human race: language.' (Excerpt from the student alumni petition letter)

A decision was made to discontinue Hong Kong CityU MFA programme, without proper consultation with faculty. Please take some time to read our student/alumni response and sign our petition for the reinstatement of the CityU MFA programme. The petition and accompanying signatures will be shared with the Provost, Chairman and President of CityU as well as other potential media sources.

I had the great pleasure and honor of teaching for a brief residency at the City University in the fall of 2012. The excitement and energy of the MFA program, the remarkable and globally diverse students all helped create a special creative place, quite unlike any I'd ever encountered. Considering the great success of this program, I am completely mystified why it is under siege right now. I sincerely hope that the City University administration will reconsider their decision to close this program.

Writing is important. Writing with a diverse and global perspective even more so. The stories will always be there but without the City U MFA who will be there to nurture them? Writers from this program deserve to be heard as much as the world need to hear them. I hope it gets to stay.

Students like me, who are passionate about writing but they are in a different career, take pride in such degree programmes which aim to nurture raw talents. I wish the programme gets reinstated soon.

As a student in the HKU MFA, I'm surprised and baffled that CityU has made this decision/mistake. The more writing programmes Hong Kong has to offer, the better. There should be as many opportunities for writers as it is possible. We need to build up a literary community of all styles and genres to show the world that there is art to be found in our city. And in spite of attending a different school, I have still benefitted from attention and events for CityU's programme which I cannot be more thankful for. Keep the CityU MFA!!

The region needs programs like this which allow both Asian and Non-Asian writers to find their voice. Plus the rationale given by the Administration for the program's closure is false; it has become financially self-sustaining. I hope the decision will be reconsidered.

As a creative writing teacher in America, and someone who has published fiction about Hong Kong, I know how precious this program is to the students, to the city, and to the country. There is no replacement.
