I had the great pleasure and honor of teaching for a brief residency at the City University in the fall of 2012. The excitement and energy of the MFA program, the remarkable and globally diverse students all helped create a special creative place, quite unlike any I'd ever encountered. Considering the great success of this program, I am completely mystified why it is under siege right now. I sincerely hope that the City University administration will reconsider their decision to close this program.

I had the honor of teaching at City University of Hong Kong as a visiting professor for two semesters and attended many terrific functions held during the MFA creative writing residencies. It's a valuable, innovative gem of a program, which serves the public as well as the literary community while fostering amazing talent from across Asia and around the world. It definitely needs to be preserved!

Losing this MFA would not only be a blow for those who wish to learn, but for all the future readers who will be robbed of so many voices of the next generation of Asian writers.

The importance of literature and art in fostering students' personality is underrated. Any reason for curbing this is unjustified. The programme should be reinstated soon.

My teacher is really passionate about this course and I believe that we shouldn't stop creative writing minds in Hong Kong.

Writing is important. Writing with a diverse and global perspective even more so. The stories will always be there but without the City U MFA who will be there to nurture them? Writers from this program deserve to be heard as much as the world need to hear them. I hope it gets to stay.

Literature is the center of culture, this would be a real loss to the community of Hong Kong, China and the far east.

As a writer who covers China in English, as an Assistant Professor at an American MFA program, as a former Hong Kong resident, and as a guest speaker at City U's program, I can attest to its uniqueness and importance in cultivating the next generation of writing on Asia. Hong Kong has already lost most of its independent media and its independent booksellers - please let's not allow its academic and artistic independence to be eviscerated, too. City U's MFA program is known and admired by English departments around the world, showing that Hong Kong produces more than bank statements. The bottom line here is not financial, but freedom. A smaller program will repay in the short-term, while the work its students and faculty produce will bring long-lasting benefits to the University and Hong Kong itself. American English departments love MFA programs for these very reasons, and so they flourish. Don't make the MFA extinct in Asia - not, especially, at the dawn of the century that requires its chroniclers, its bridges between East and West.

Students like me, who are passionate about writing but they are in a different career, take pride in such degree programmes which aim to nurture raw talents. I wish the programme gets reinstated soon.

Save this programme! So that i could have a chance of enrolling someday. :)
I think courses like these are important not just for exploring the inherent cultures and cultural writings but also to help the participants improve their chances of expanding both their talents and chances globally. To cut out such a course would mean that a window would be closed, ... a window that lets the world see in through the writing and a window for the community to explore, expand and exchange literature and culture.
I hope that CityU reconsiders the stance.
