For fifty years three oak trees have stood by the Tobin/Vassal Lane schools always proudly flanking the building and providing shade in beauty to the school community. Unfortunately they are now threatened and slated to be cut down because the school building is being rebuilt. However the new school's footprint does not rest on the spot where these three trees stand so there is no reason to remove these trees. The city plans to put a stormwater tank underneath the trees removing them in the process but there are other places where the city could put the tank that would not result in removing mature trees. If we cut these trees down this area will be a heat island completely exposed to air pollution from Fresh Pond Parkway. Let's let these trees stand another fifty years.
I hope this petition will get more signatures! It deserves hundreds. It would be a crime do chop these trees down, even if it is for improved school building. With some imagination, the landscape designers and architects should be able to do both. This is Cambridge!
