Dear Boston Public Schools Committee:
Today,I learned that Boston Public Schools is trying to close down the John W. McCormack middle school. Everyone is really upset about this situation. Many of the students, including me, have said "The McCormack makes me feel welcome. This school is different than the other schools. It's really diverse here and it makes people from all over the world feel at home."
I,Ashley,am going to talk about how much this school has helped me specifically. This school has helped me improve at writing,math,and so much more! The school counselor has helped me feel so much better about myself. She has made me feel like people actually accept me. The teachers also make me feel very happy. They make sure I understand what I am being taught and I really appreciate that since I struggle to remember things.
This school has made me feel smarter, more confident,safe,welcome and like I am part of the family. Please don't close the school because it helps everyone more than you think it does. Please think about how people feel about this situation instead of just focusing on buildings and money. This isn't hurting you but it sure is hurting us.
Please reconsider the closure of the McCormack, and allow us to keep our family together.

Exactly what are the reasons for closing the McCormack? Can BPS provide clear reasoning? And can BPS provide a plan that doesn't include sending students to a school already facing significant challenges and one without appropriate programming?
Ashley, the student who wrote this petition, demonstrates what the McCormack staff, students and family know: a school is about more than a building. It is a community, one that works together to create learners and leaders. Hard decisions need to be made to make the BPS a stronger school system, but closing the McCormack is not the solution. #KeepMccormackOpen
I believe in more transparency from BPS in decisions affecting schools serving marginalized populations. Boston Latin would not get shut down in this manner.
McCormack is the most special school I’ve ever seen/experienced. The culture fostered by every adult and student and visitor is one of love, respect, and academic rigor. The students thrive because they are valued. If BPS truly has the student’s best interest in mind, they would reconsider closing a school as important and established at the McCormack.
I used to teach at the McCormack, so I know first-hand what an exceptional community it is. It would be a crime to break up this community for no reason when the building is still in good condition.
The children and communities deserve to be better served.
I attended the McCormack and remember when the namesake came during the dedication, around late 60's, early 70's!!!!!! Big parade, etc.

We have built a wonderful community of staff and students here! Supportive restorative justice practices leading the way in the district with design planning and thinking in mind with our new schedule that includes school-wide recess and implementation of Design practices school wide. There’s a lot going on here! Please support us staying together.
