We, the undersigned residents, are in support to the reinstatement of the Yost Penguin community swim team program at Yost Park Pool.

Yost Penguins is a welcoming, inclusive, and affordable swim team that serves a broad range of swimmers. Yost Penguins is a place where inclusion is practiced daily and kids get to have fun while moving and strengthening their bodies and their swim skills.

The positive impacts include, but are not limited to:

  • The Yost Penguins swim team provides physical and mental health – as well as important water safety benefits to our youth.
  • The Yost Penguins swim team program provides an equitable opportunity for families of all economic backgrounds to participate in a recreational activity that is hosted at a city-owned facility.
  • Yost Penguins has played an important role as a community hub – bringing together hundreds of Edmonds families and kids each summer, every year. In our current era we need to be looking for more of these opportunities to bring together our community.

We understand the need to postpone Yost Pool swim activities in 2020 due to the pandemic. However, the decision to eliminate the community swim team this year was particularly disappointing, because it coincided with agreements to allow a competitive and much more exclusive swim program use of the pool. These decisions seem antithetical to the Y's mission and the duties of the City of Edmonds to serve its citizens.

"We place service above self, with an unwavering and unbiased commitment to public safety, improving the quality of life for our community." Mission/Vision - City of Edmonds, WA (edmondswa.gov)

The Y is Where Community Thrives

At the YMCA of Greater Seattle, we’re building a community where all people, especially the young, are encouraged to develop their fullest potential in spirit, mind, and body… We share a commitment to nurturing the potential of kids, improving health and well-being, giving back, and supporting our neighbors.” Greater Seattle YMCA Website

We ask the city and YMCA to serve its citizens and members by working together to find a creative solution that allows for the continuation of Yost Penguins program in 2021 and in the future.

The growth of this petition warrants a formal meeting request with the Edmonds Parks and Recreation department. I am drafting a briefing document that outlines our specific proposal for reinstating the Yost Penguins program next season.

All our kids need opportunities for participating in what they know and love. There must be a way to make time and space for our kids. The community saved Yost Pool before, we can do the same for the Penguins. Tell us how much money you need and let's raise it since that seems to be the way to be the way the decisions are made.

The Yost pool was a fabulous venue for all of my children who did not fit the qualifications for select sports. It is not fair to rent the pool out to a select organization and take the community aspect away from the children who look forward to participating each year at Yost. Please reconsider.

Please consider bringing swim team back to Yost this summer. My son is looking to complete in high school next year and needs to training and conditioning that this program brings. Especially in these unprecedented times.

Swimming is a LIFE SKILL. The Penguins have been around forever! Please don’t take this away from our kids. A child loses a lot of confidence and survival skills by losing 2+ years of swimming. Bring back our community swim team!

I have no options for swim team for my son. He has been on the Yost team for 9 years. It is the only affordable option we have. I lost my job of 17 years due to COVID but have kept my membership to the Y on hold for over a year in hopes the Yost team will happen. There is no affordable option for swimming in shoreline or Edmonds. Please reconsider.

Underprivileged, and differently abled kids need this space and opportunity. There should be room for both teams, if not, the competitive, able bodied children’s parents and team owners/coaches have more opportunity to find space elsewhere. I’m highly disappointed in this decision and behavior.

Please allow the Yost Penguins swim team to return this summer. Our kids and community need it now more than ever!

Yost Penguins are part of the Edmonds community, so why are outside clubs being given precedence?
