Dear Council Members,

We, the undersigned residents of Voorhees Township and members of the Kirkwood Community Coalition, urge you to preserve the Carriage House site as protected open space.

This land is home to nesting bald eagles, as well as red-shouldered hawks, great blue herons, green herons, ospreys, and other endangered and protected species. These species depend on the wetlands and surrounding habitat that would be irreversibly damaged by development.

The township itself recognized the site’s importance as far back as 2004, when the Voorhees Open Space and Recreation Plan ranked it 8th out of 50 potential preservation sites. That long-standing designation affirms its ecological and recreational value.

Preserving the Carriage House site would also enhance Voorhees’ network of bike paths and walking trails, providing a safe, scenic rest stop for families, cyclists, and nature lovers—a place to enjoy the outdoors while protecting vital habitat.

We respectfully ask the Council to work with county and state partners to formally designate this land as open space, ensuring that it remains a sanctuary for wildlife and a natural treasure for our community.

Please protect this unique part of Kirkwood’s landscape for future generations.

This property has been left unattended to for years and years and has already essentially become a natural wildlife refuge. Let’s make this permanent.

Kirkwood currently has no areas of open space. This is disheartening to see as the rest of Voorhees has areas like Connelly park & blueberry hill, etc. dedicated to preservation. The area is home to many unique species including a nesting bald eagle pair that has been returning to the same location for 5+ years. The location has been vacant for as long as I can remember and all residents of kirkwood (including threatened species) would greatly benefit from having this space permanently protected. It’s time to stand up for Kirkwood & Gibbsboro and protect our communities treasures.

I am a Voorhees resident that lives on Kirkwood- Gibbsboro Road and I don’t want to see our wetland destroyed for this senior house. It will become a disruption to our quiet neighborhood. The Swifts

There is a need for more green space! The township should consider how to utilize this space for public good while preserving the natural habitat of the symbol of our nation!

Kirkwood, with its quaint homes, scenic views and abundant wildlife, is a historic part of Voorhees Township. With little green space remaining in Kirkwood, this tract with all its attributes should be preserved. It is a treasure that could be used to observe nature and educate younger generations.

The beautiful trees and open space make the Carriage house serene and peaceful. I love seeing the eagle and nature out my window every day& would hate to see it destroyed.
