We, the families of Carpenter Elementary School, disagree with the 5thGrade Teachers and the Administration’s decision to cancel the 5th Grade Field Trip to Washington D.C. We petition the Administration to reinstate the 5th Grade Field Trip to D.C. next year and to continue to include this trip in the fifth grade curriculum taught at Carpenter Elementary School.
The past two years our children have been at Carpenter, the big event was the field trip to Washington, DC. This year students that are now fifth graders at Carpenter Elementary were told that this field trip that was not going to take place. An official reason was not announced but parents that inquired were told it was due to a new Wake County rule for children on medications and the cumbersome job of planning and collecting payment. Yet, several other schools in the county will still be going this year. The principal then stated that overnight field trips would no longer be an option at Carpenter. This information was never formally announced, thus there are parents of children in lower grades that have no idea that this decision has been made.
Students enjoy the sights of far-off cities, get hands-on education and learn a thing or two about independence and receive opportunities for social growth and development. This trip highlights resources in our nation’s capital and surrounding areas. We ask for this trip and our student’s right to experience the same as all others be reinstated. I have been in contact with several school board members to clarify the inconsistencies regarding overnight trip policies. It is clear that our concerns about equity across the district are being noted by those in positions of authority.

The momentum behind our request to reinstate the Washington D.C. field trip has grown significantly. It is clear that the community values these educational experiences for our students. We are taking this collective interest to the administration as the next step in our efforts.

This trip absolutely needs to be re-instated. To cancel a wonderful learning opportunity that kids will remember for years to come because it's too difficult to plan is absurd and unfair to the children. My daughters have been looking forward to this trip the whole time they have been at Carpenter. I will gladly help in whatever planning needs to be done to keep this as part of the curriculum.
I fully support the resumption of the 5th grade field trips to Washington, DC. These types of trips allow our children to make personal connections to the material they learn in school. There is more to it than just words on paper. Washington DC offers an unparalleled collection of information available regarding our rich history. This personal connection allows our children to understand how our great country developed and be better citizens.
I support a fifth grade field trip to Washington DC. I would offer any assistance (coordination, gathering money, chaperone, etc.) to the teachers and students to enable this opportunity. I is an educational experience that will likely last a lifetime.
This is a great learning experience for our students and kind of, a right of passage. It would be a shame to lose this opportunity at our school for our current 5th graders, as well as the lower grades future trips. Please reconsider the decision to cancel the DC trip. Thank you for your consideration in this matter.
My daughter got so much out of this trip last year, even with the change due to weather. We were really excited for our son to have the same opportunity. I know it's a challenge to organize, but it is so appreciated.
I wanted to give everyone an update on this peition. I shared the petition with Miss Jones two weeks ago and she has not made any acknowledgement of it. I contacted the area superintendent and his response was that we continue to work with Miss Jones on this issue. Since we are a year round school, it is difficult for me to reach out to parents in the other three tracks. I urge you to share your concerns with Miss Jones and continue to share this peition with other parents. I am only able to reach a small percentage of the school myself and I have to believe that of the 700+ students at our school, there are a lot more parents out there that would sign this petition than the current amount of signatures reflects. We will not see a change unless we continue to voice our concerns to her. Thanks for your support!
This was a great experience for my oldest daughter. I hope my other kids can have it too!

Our son in grade 4 has been looking forward to this trip. I went on a similar trip to DC when I was a kid and was enthusiastic about him getting to go. Very disappointed in this news
