Reinstate Outdoor Education/Camp Lakeview Elementary 5th Grade Students

We the undersigned, herby petition to have our Lakeview Elementary students, attend outdoor education by reinstating camp for 5th graders starting the 2017-2018 school year and beyond.

We believe camp gives kids an experience of being on their own in a structured, supportive, supervised and safe environment, while trying new adventures away from home. The time away from parents provides an excellent opportunity for children to take initiative, exercise their autonomy, develop leadership, problem-solving and social skills, which all build self-esteem. Youth development experts agree, camp challenges kids and takes them out of their comfort environment to create positive experiences. This growth and maturing contributes to them becoming healthy adolescents and adults.

  • We, the parents, are willing to take on the financial responsibility for their children to go to camp. Including willing to volunteer to ensure camp success.
  • Our children are excited about the opportunity of doing outdoor education and the experience that their parents had going to camp. The Lakeview students are willing to help raise funds and do whatever else is necessary to make this happen.
  • We agree to work in tandem with the Lakeview PTSA board, to ensure all costs are covered (including providing any needed scholarships) for every 5th grade student.

Please contact Malia McCabe (425) 889-0136, if you need to contact our committee regarding this petition or for further questions or concerns.

I had the opportunity to attend camp as a 6th grader in elementary school while attending Margaret Mead Elementary and again as a counselor my senior year of high school at Redmond, absolutely loved the experience both times. I would be happy to help raise funds if this is a budget issue.

As an educator and grandparent of 2 children at Lakeview I love the variety of experiences from which children learn Certainly this is one of them Please consider this.

Outdoor education is extremely important and I believe not doing the camp is disservice to the children.

My daughter went to camp Seymour this year and she loved it! She is in Quest at Ben Franklin Elementary. I hope Lakeview will reinstate this activity for the 5th graders and hopefully our son will be having one when he gets to be a 5th grader.

I agree that outdoor education and learning experiences away from home can be incredibly valuable. However, as someone new to this area and school district, I don't feel I have the background other petition-signers might on this issue. Could you share when the camp experience was discontinued and the cited reason? When and where has the camp typically taken place? Who attends/chaperones the trip? Thanks!

I'm curious what the 5th grade teachers at Lakeview have to say. It is a huge undertaking for the teachers.

My daughter experienced Outdoor Ed at Juanita Elementary and it was a very worthwhile experience. Every child should have the opportunity to go.
