Conservatives running South Ribble Borough Council have held behind closed doors discussions to close down our leisure centres. After numerous refusals to give an assurance that Penwortham, Bamber Bridge and Leyland leisure centres would not be closed, the Conservative cabinet member responsible appeared on Radio Lancashire laying out his vision which included the closures, instead building a new multi million pound facility at Farington Moss.

We the undersigned object to the South Ribble Borough Council Cabinet plans to close our leisure centres.

I have been reading every single story you leave in the comments about what these centers mean to your families. It is clear that the council is not listening to the people who actually rely on these facilities every week.

Seeing this momentum grow reminds me of the countless hours I spent at the pool in Penwortham as a kid. It is clear I am not the only one who refuses to let them erase these vital community spaces.

How will younger teens get to this new super centre when they cann't drive? What happen to having good LOCAL services to promote healthy living. Another nail in the coffin for higher Penwortham community.

These leisure centres are a vital lifeline to many elderly people who would not be able to access out of town centres. It is a way of keeping fit and healthy and sometimes the only social contact they have.

My local leisure centre encourages me and my family to WALK for swim sessions. Therefore reducing carbon emmisons and better for my childs health. I thought we were concerned about childhood obesity?! I wont drive to farrington moss quite as regulalry as i walk to penwortham.

To close three operational, well patronised, in profit, accessible leisure centres in order to build one new centre which is only accessible by private vehicle is utterly ill conceived nonsense for many, many reasons.

Insanity to close 3 local in profit leisure centres to build a vanity project inaccessible to those without a car. Penwortham in particular has lost enough in the last year with the closure of the library & the imminent loss of the church hall.

We are all supposed to be conscious about pollution so let's close local facilities and move them 10 mile away at our expense.

How can Leyland children access facilities outside town? We currently can't get to swim because of all the schools using Leyland pool - how could reduced facilities even cope with the numbers of schools?
