Current Minister for Agricultural and Rural Development Michelle O’Neill has sold the farming community short in the latest round of job cuts. This morning the instructors of short courses in Greenmount college attended a meeting in which they were told that the training department will be closed from September 2015. These courses are a legal requirement and are compulsory for farmers and those working within agriculture. Farmers will now have to seek training in private establishments where the costs are considerably more. Local farmers are the ones that will pay the price for this mismanagement.

Commercial service providers will be out with the ability of many family businesses. These kind of short-term austerity-led cutbacks will result in greater industry wide costs resulting from dropping health and safety standards leading to increased production costs, eventually resulting in higher prices in the shops and further reduced farm profit margins.
