Oxfam Bookshop Littlehampton is due to close on March 16th 2015, it would be a great shame to lose such a lovely little shop. Littlehampton is arguably filled with a lot of charity shops, but none that solely sell books and certainly none with such a varied, substantial selection. The vast majority of books are no more than £1, which is far, far less than other shops selling used books locally. They always have up to date titles at bargain prices, including, popular fiction, children books, academic books, classics, hobbies, CD's, LP's - everything!!

I am not sure if the bookshop that opened up opposite the other week was part of the decision to close the store, but having visited this shop, they are of no threat to Oxfam. Their target market is completely different, specialising in academic books (at at least quadruple the price) if anything, the opening of this shop should encourage more book lovers to cross the road to visit the Oxfam bookshop also.

This is a lovely little shop, with friendly staff and a charming bookshop atmosphere that you cannot get in the sterile high street stores. Most importantly, we should remember the sole purpose of this store is to help those in need, I would personally rather give my money to a charity shop than a faceless, corporate high street store for 10x the price.

I am not sure what can be done (if anything) to save the shop, but I hope this petition will at least make head office aware of local feeling. Please sign and share this petition with everyone you know and if possible, actually visit the shop and buy a book! Speak with your feet! We haven't got long to make a difference.

You can also contact head office to voice your feeling by emailing [email protected] giving the following details:

I have been spending my afternoons in the shop watching people browse and thinking about how much we stand to lose if these shelves go empty. The stories you are sharing about what this store means to you keep me going when I feel discouraged by the lack of response from head office. I am still trying to get a straight answer from someone in charge about why they are willing to walk away from such a vital part of our town.

Seeing this level of support for a shop that has been my weekly escape for years really hits home. I never thought so many people shared my love for these aisles, and this momentum gives me real hope that we might actually be heard.

I have so many wonderful books and useful bits and pieces from the shop and have recycled lots myself. An asset to the town for 41 years.
