Prior to 2015, there was no rule in the Temple Hills HOA bylaws specifically about basketball goals.
Because of an unresolved issue w a single homeowner, HOA passed a sweeping rule preventing anyone from having a temporary goal on their property; claiming that the temp goals were bad for property values and were unsightly. HOA sent a notice to homeowners then asking them to remove their goals and gave them a 3 year window to do so or face liability of fines and potential lien on a home if they did not comply. That window is closing and those in non-compliance as of 8/15/18 will be fined $150 by the HOA until they are in compliance.
The outrage and dismay in our community is evident and this petition is designed to harness that frustration into a collective voice for change. That bylaw HAS to be amended as it's not rooted in what's best for property values or a thriving community of families with kids.
Please add your voice to this petition so we can build enough momentum around the issue that HOA will have to pay attention and make the change. Also, please share this with those who might also want to have a voice in the effort to amend the bylaw.

I was looking at the screen and just realized how many people are actually in this with us now. It feels like the neighborhood is finally waking up to how ridiculous this rule really is which honestly makes me want to go out and shoot some hoops myself even though my jump shot is terrible.

Just like the pool not having a summer social membership for kids, this community has always felt more adult-priority focused to us. Basketball in our driveway was the one activity my son really enjoyed here.
I am fully in support of this. My driveway configuration does not allow for a permanent goal to be placed, and I have an eight-year-old daughter who wants to practice and play basketball. We should be encouraging our kids to go outside and play as much as we can. Let use commonsense and do away with this bylaw.
We can't be so blinded as a community/neighborhood that we don't allow the simple joy of a basketball goal. Temple Hills is growing quickly with young families, and when I see kids riding their bikes along the streets or hosting lemonade stands, I think that's what makes our neighborhood so sweet. Keep the goals = keep the families.
My concerns are more about people speeding down Temple Road, car break-ins and unwanted solicitors. Keep the kids safe and playing in our own yards.
Actually, I think portable goals are better than perm. ones which can't be easily removed or repaired. As far as home values go, with perm ones, the new home owner is stuck with that, whereas portable ones can be removed by the seller.
All - just a quick note to let you know that the next board meeting is tomorrow (10/11/18) at 7:30 in the TH clubhouse. It's not likely that they're going to address the basketball goal issue, but I'll be there to continue to ask q's and push for a pause in fees. I am confident that the $250k "curb" renovations will be discussed, so I encourage you to show up if you don't want these guys to make a decision about your dues w out your input. The leadership of this board has made it very clear they are willing and open to working behind the best interests of homeowners. They have their sights set on the curb renovation and it'll cost us $250k. Hope to see you there.
The portable basketball goals should be allowed. They are not an eyesore.

I believe it is not the HOA’s purpose and they have not only overstepped their authority but also ignored what a large portion of our communtity would want in regards to this matter. It is also not part of our original bi laws and should not have to be observed.
