Started by South Coast Roller Derby 1 year ago

The city of Laguna Hills approved a budget to demolish the outdoor hockey rink at the Laguna Hills Community Center and replace it with permanent pickleball courts. We are petitioning the city of Laguna Hills to create a shared-use space instead.

We are South Coast Roller Derby, a flat-track roller derby league that has been skating at the Laguna Hills Community Center for a decade. We are a by-skaters, for-skaters 501(C)(3) nonprofit league of dedicated athletes, officials and volunteers. We pride ourselves on the strength of our diversity. We foster leadership, empower skaters, and set a high bar for sportsmanship. The skaters of SCRD train year-round, bringing the dynamic sport of roller derby to fans of all ages.

SCRD is active in our community; we attend pride events, set up community cleanups, host youth skating events, and fundraise for causes like breast cancer research and LGBTQ+ youth suicide prevention. We are a third space in the community that has created a support system for many disenfranchised people.

We would like to petition the city of Laguna Hills to convert the approved plans for permanent pickleball courts into a shared use space so we can continue to have a place in our home community. We hope to coexist with pickleball without losing our practice space!

We fought our city and came to a shared compromise. A lot of support from surrounding leagues, continuous attendance at all city council and planning meetings, flooding counsel members with emails...a lot. Fingers crossed for your league. Call me of you need any help PCRD. Great Dame.

Please don’t wipe out the local roller derby’s home (and only facility option) for the sake of another pickleball-only court! Let’s work together to build a track we can both play on as one Laguna Hills family <3

The trend of changing multi-use spaces into single use pickleball courts is short sighted. Pickleball can also be played in these spaces without taking it away from other community groups like roller derby. Please look into alternative options! There are so few multi-use spaces left!!!

Please save the hockey rink and make this a shared use space for hockey, roller derby and pickleball. There aren’t many other options like this for roller derby and this is a great location. A shared use space makes much more sense and works for everyone.

I'm in Tustin and have visited and have friends who play in this area; there's no reason to convert it out of being a shared use space into something that has a much narrower appeal and many existing spaces.

Pickle ball is a versatile sport that can be played in a variety of spaces. Hockey and Roller Derby have extremely limited spaces for them to play, do not remove our access to a needed space for our sports! We need rinks like this one, or our sport will be pushed out of existence.

Please leave the rink as a rink. There are many tennis courts to use for pickleball. I used to skate here until it was locked. Open skating hours would be greatly appreciated.

Please don't demolish one sport to cater to a fad sport like pickleball. Currently, the hockey rink accomodates hockey and roller derby. These have been around for years. The pickleball fad will pass.
