This is a national issue which will be of direct concern to the people of Calderdale Council when DEFRA "rolls out" its culling policy in 2014.
The object of the petition is to ensure that Calderdale Council's badger population is as safe as possible from slaughter and that the already available injectable badger vaccine against bTB is used in as many cases as possible.
We ask this because we believe the culling policy is inhumane (DEFRA's measurement of "humaneness" is to time the screams of wounded badgers), inefficient (previous culls showed an increase in bTB because of badger movement) and unscientific (the majority of scientific opinion hold that a cull will have "no meaningful result").

I am honestly stunned by how many of you care about our local badgers. This momentum belongs entirely to the people who took the time to speak up for them.

I am completely appalled that the council should consider such a barbaric move. Badgers have enough to contend with given the thugs who take part in badger baiting and now 'official' killing is to take place. It's just too horrible to contemplate.
The cull will not help solve a problem, only tranish Calderdale's reputation amongst walkers, wildlife enthusiasts, and other visitors.
This should absolutely be the last resort, after the vaccine has been tried first. It has been scientifically proved that the cull will have no meaningful result.
As a long term Calderdale resident and only recently moved away I am horrified to think a cull could take place in Calderdale and very strongly oppose any plan to to carry one out.
The cause of the very small numbers of bovine TB in cattle in Calderdale is infection which originates in cattle from high TB areas such as the SW of England. Calderdale's badgers do not have TB; and it would be totally wrong to scapegoat them when they neither harbour nor pass on the bovine TB cattle disease.

The govt always make such a big issue of following scientific evidence but in the case of the badger cull the evidence says culling does not work. It is not just a matter of sentimentality. Please do not allow the destruction of our badgers to appease a minority of farmers.
