Culling should not be a 21st century practice?

The govt always make such a big issue of following scientific evidence but in the case of the badger cull the evidence says culling does not work. It is not just a matter of sentimentality. Please do not allow the destruction of our badgers to appease a minority of farmers.

STOP THE CULL

There is just no reason for this at all. most of the animals killed in the trial were free from TB. Cows should be vaccinated, Any region where badgers are culled should have their milk boycotted.

I am opposed to all badger culling. Science has not proved conclusively that this is beneficial for bovine tuberculosis and much of the culling has been inordinately cruel to the badgers as it leaves them suffering. If Calderdale is considering badger culling, I urge them to reconsider. This is nothing more than wanton cruelty to animals imposed by the Government.

TB thrives in impoverished conditions. The cows contract TB because they are not cared for properly. Heaven forbid, however, that farmers actually be criticised for failing to provide basic care to their livestock, when it is so much easier to pick a scapegoat. Studies show that badger-culling has little or no effect on Bovine TB rates - in some cases it actually increases as displaced badgers flee and take TB with them to new territories. The badger cull is not helping to control TB or alleviate the problems facing farmers and the systematic extirpation of this harmless species is scientifically and morally unsupportable. However, in rural matters, the whims of the bloodthirsty are so often executed and perpetuated by the wilfully misinformed.

I am completely appalled that the council should consider such a barbaric move. Badgers have enough to contend with given the thugs who take part in badger baiting and now 'official' killing is to take place. It's just too horrible to contemplate.

If we are all vaccinated then why not cows?

Vaccination is the only way of getting rid of the disease!!!!

My belief is that over-farming cattle (two many cows in the same field) is the main cause of the spread of Bovine TB. LEAVE THE BADGERS ALONE - THEY HAVE BEEN AROUND A LOT LONGER THAN GREEDY FARMERS!!

The cull will not help solve a problem, only tranish Calderdale's reputation amongst walkers, wildlife enthusiasts, and other visitors.

This should absolutely be the last resort, after the vaccine has been tried first. It has been scientifically proved that the cull will have no meaningful result.

Its a disgrace, the Badgers are a scapegoat for everything, have a look at bad farmers transporting diseased cattle from farm to farm. Badgers are the easiest to blame for politicians. The government needs to get a grip and listen to what the scientists say instead of pussyfooting to the farmers whims, vaccines would be much more viable.
