Save Braunstone Golden Gloves ABC Boxing Gym
Leicester City Council are proposing to close the Oak Centre in Braunstone. This centre is used by a broad spectrum of the community for a variety of meetings and groups day and night. It is also where Braunstone Golden Gloves ABC Gym is located. This petition is to show your support for the gym, firstly against closure of the Oak Centre and secondly if the centre closes for the council to ensure suitable premises for Braunstone Golden Gloves ABC in the local area.
Braunstone park area is the 25th most deprived area of 324 local authority areas with a higher than average number of children in Leicester living in poverty. Braunstone Golden Gloves ABC Gym is a grassroots community gym, the gym is popular with adults and children. A number of promising young boxers attend the gym. Tom Hessin regularly trains at the gym, he is the junior champion and boxed for England at the Tri Nations. A positive role model for all and in particular young people in the local area. It is essential we ensure the gym can continue with its fantastic work with some of the most vulnerable and disadvantaged young people in this area.
The Olympics helped to highlight the importance of this sport. It helps young people and adults in so many ways, with physical and mental health, discipline, respect, pride, community spirit, positive use of leisure time to name a few. To loose such a community asset would be devastating. Olympic champions come from grassroot gyms like this and this gym is already home to some very promising young talent. Without the gym there is no way the next British champion will come from Braunstone Golden Gloves ABC.
