The intersection of Center St and Edwards/Old Village Dr sees a lot of foot and bike traffic. Many neighborhood kids in OLV, Salt Grass, and beyond cross these roads in the morning and afternoon on their way to MPA or Moultrie Middle School. Throughout the day and evening, residents walk with dogs, children in strollers, or other adults across these roads.

We see more and more traffic using Center St to cut through OV. That is fine if they would only slow down and look out for the children in particular. Many of us have watched cars speed by and fail to yield to pedestrians and bike riders waiting on the side of the road. There is a yield sign at both sides of Center St but it doesn't seem to faze most drivers.

Too many children ride their bikes the wrong way out of the Old Village Drive because the crosswalk is only accessible from one side. It's time to add one to the other side to prevent unnecessary accidents.

I propose we ask the Town of Mount Pleasant to add in a clearly defined crosswalk on three sides of the intersection as indicated in the diagram. This will act as a secondary alert to drivers from all directions to yield to pedestrians.

Please sign this petition to show your support. I would like to present this at the Town of Mount Pleasant Transportation Committee meeting on Monday September 30th.

Any additional questions can be emailed to me, an Old Village Landing resident, at [email protected]. Thank you!

I spent half the morning watching cars blow right past those yield signs and it honestly just makes my blood boil because the kids are literally just standing there waiting for an opening that never comes. I have been putting together a folder of all the near misses people keep emailing me about so we can show the committee that this is not just me being paranoid about the traffic speed.

I honestly cannot believe how fast this is growing, it is like seeing the whole neighborhood wake up at once to realize we are all tired of dodging cars just to walk the dog or get the kids to school. It feels like the town actually has to pay attention to us now because the sheer amount of people who want this intersection fixed is just too big to ignore, which honestly feels surreal when I think back to just staring at that empty crosswalk last week.

Agreed. Center is becoming a major cut through and it isnt safe anymore with all the bike kids.

drivers going through here are way to fast. someone is going to get hit eventually if we dont slow them down.

I also think we should have a sidewalk next to the street similar to what was done on Edwards by the church property to get kids and families out of the street as they come in and out of our neighborhood - even if it’s only from Center St to the corner of Gatepost.

I have considered proposing a 4 way stop sign at this intersection. Please consider the implementation of these crosswalks. Thank you. Margaret Rodenberg
