Dr Manning J Sabatier is adamantly against the adoption of a dog into the Sabatier household. He believes it will be cost-prohibitive and the other members of the household will not adequately care for the dog, and the care and cost of the dog will ulitmately fall completely and utterly and devastatingly on his shoulders.
The other members of the Sabatier household, spouse Jennifer (an equal financial contributor to the household) and son Luc (aged 11), are desperate for a dog. Cat Sphinx, while an adequate addition to the family, is only beloved by Jennifer and is not amenable to going for a run, playing fetch, or socializing with other beings other than Jennifer, and sometimes select humans.
In addition, Luc is destined to be an only child and a dog would serve as a surrogate younger sibling for the few short six and half years he has before he goes off to college. In addition, a dog would help to teach Luc the responsibility of caring for a living being because he would be responsible for taking the dog for walks after school, and various other times of the day, and he would be responsible for certain care of the dog. Jennifer, who grew up with dogs and who once had sole care of a horse (before school, after school, and before bed) will help teach Luc how to care for the dog.

Jennifer and Luc are willing to sign a contract guaranteeing their commitment in the care on the dog. Manning will not find himself waking up at 5am to take the dog for a walk, unless he wants to. Or at 11pm. Other terms of the contract can be negotiated and if the contract is violated then we agree to rehome the dog.
