The city council finally folded and approved the youth shelter project after we kept the pressure on them for months. It is infuriating that it took this much public outrage to force our leaders to do the bare minimum for kids on the street. We won this fight, but stay …

Moreno Valley has a growing homeless population. A Riverside County Point in Time homeless survey from 2018 reflects an increase in homelessness for the third year in a row. Among those affected by homelessness are youth. Things are changing rapidly for everyone and it is time to address the visible fact that our area is severely lacking in local resources for the homeless. The nearest homeless shelter is located in Riverside, which means youth who have been affected by unexpected hardships turn to the streets or pursue a lengthy commute to Riverside. Homelessness can happen to anyone at any time. No one is exempt by unforeseen events.

Our local officials have an important responsibility to address the primary reasons as to why Moreno Valley residents are being affected by homelessness. We understand that building a shelter in Moreno Valley is not a long term solution for our young people currently living on the streets, but it is a step forward in assisting individuals who seek sanctuary in a time of need.

We, the residents and stakeholders of Moreno Valley want to see a solution NOW for housing the homeless. This is the time for action. Consolidating services and shelter to one area of our neighborhood in Moreno Valley will be a great first step.

Our hope is that this petition urges our local officials and residents of Moreno Valley to address homelessness. Far too many people are living on our streets.

Please exercise your voice of compassion and let our elected officials and neighbors know we support a homeless shelter in Moreno Valley.

I work with KIDS age 6-12 I have lost many amazing students in my program because they were homeless struggling for some sort of stability. This is needed so that our kids believe in their ability to get out of rock bottom & make something respectable of themselves as opposed to living a life of crime or worse choosing not to live anymore because the world just seems to hopeless for them & their situation.

As a school board member of the Centinela Valley Board of Education, speaking on my own behalf, I believe all students should have their most basic needs met and as elected officials it is our duty to help our students in need. Housing insecurities impede our students from focusing on school and their personal growth.

As an Assistant Principal and Homeless Liaison for a multi-site school (including one in Moreno Valley), I understand homelessness as a growing problem amongst youth and adults in the area. Increased shelter and resources for youth and adults in the area would positively impact their ability to live, learn, and contribute to our community.
