Rosemont College to add an in-depth African American history courses that will compliment the general education requirements and core values of RC
At Rosemont College we have general education requirements that help broaden our secondary education. The Mission Statement of Rosemont College states that they encourage “trust in and reverence for the dignity of each person;” “Diversity with a commitment to building an intercultural community;” “Persistence and courage in promoting justice with compassion.”
As students of the college we would like to add an extensive and in-depth African American history course that includes modern day challenges for people of color. In doing this, we would like it to be a general educational requirement that accomplishes the global awareness or humanities requirement.
This petition advocates for the addition of this course to further compliment the Liberal Arts education of Rosemont. It will enhance the skills students will need to live and work in a diverse world. This will strengthen the core beliefs and values of Rosemont College.
*Disclaimer: We are now aware that there is an African American History class from 1865-Present day (His 221). It is offered every other year. With this we would like to extend the curriculum to a more in depth understand of the oppression of minority groups. We wish for classes that look for the full experience of what it means to be Black in America along with systematic racism.

Rosemont College talks a big game about diversity and justice but their current curriculum is a hollow gesture that barely scratches the surface. I am tired of waiting for the administration to stop hiding behind an occasional elective and finally commit to a real education on systemic racism and Black history. We are forcing this conversation onto their desk whether they want to address it or not.

Rosemont College is failing to honor its own mission statement by hiding Black history in a sporadic, elective shadow. The surge in support shows that students are finished with these excuses and demand a curriculum that actually reflects the reality of systemic racism.

This class is long overdue. Learning about history from 1865 just isnt enough to understand the full picture.
I was an exchange student at Rosemont. For future students from my home school, they should all get an opportunity to gain knowledge on that
No one has anything to lose from this course being implemented and so much to gain from it.
Love this! Please ensure that the history starts at the beginning of time, not at the start of slavery. We had a life, a prosperous one, way before slavery.
As a new alumni of the college, I would like to see a course like this implemented in the general education curriculum at Rosemont College. I feel that it lines up perfectly with the values and goals outlined in the college’s mission statement.

The curriculum definitely needs a refresh. Glad people are speaking up about this.
