Re: Road Safety Concern – Zebra Crossing (Tonbridge Rd j/w Riding Lane)

I am a pupil at a school, Hildenborough, Kent. I use the Zebra Crossing in Tonbridge Road (j/w Riding Lane) frequently, along with other students from my school, pupils from other schools and people from the local community. Often when I have been trying to cross the road, I have found that car users do not stop when someone is waiting! The crossing is used by the local community daily to cross the busy road safely when out; shopping, running, walking and whilst using the local bus and train service.

The Zebra Crossing is used regularly, especially during the morning and at the end of school, which is when the roads around the crossing are very busy! I am in the process of trying to find out if anyone else at my school or within the local community has experienced a similar problem when trying to cross the road.

I am concerned that there may soon be an accident and feel the crossing needs to be altered to one that has traffic lights!

Please help me to make a change by signing my petition.

Thank you for your support.

I have been standing by that crossing during the morning rush and watching cars speed past despite people waiting to walk across. It makes me more determined than ever to get a proper traffic light signal installed because I am terrified someone is going to get hurt out there.

Seeing this kind of momentum confirms that I am not the only one feeling vulnerable while trying to cross that road. Every person who joins this effort makes me feel safer about the walk to school each day.

I live near the crossing in Foxbush and I agree the crossing is dangerous. Often visibility is poor because of delivery lorries to the One Stop shop double parking because of cars in the layby.

I live in Hildenborough drive out this way every day It’s very rare drivers stop here I often see people waiting to cross and cars continue to drive straight through

It would be a brilliant idea to put traffic lights there. Not only for people crossing the road, but to slow down the traffic so people pulling out of riding Lane don't have such a hard job seeing if the road is clear and having to pull out fast to keep up with the moving traffic.

This crossing is a serious blind spot for drivers. Many times I have not been seen by passing drivers. The pedestrian crossing does not work well here. It’s so dangerous. Which is unacceptable being right next to a busy school.

Even though the speed limit has been reduced it is rarely adhered to. Speeding cars cannot see the students on the school side of the crossing very easily and it is only a matter of time before someone gets hurt or worse.

I agree Harvey, where the pavement is so narrow on the school side of the crossing, visibility can be very poor, with car drivers not always being able to see if there are people waiting to cross.

We live in the village and agree there needs to be lights somewhere on this road to improve the crossing situation

Crossing should be replaced by traffic lights as it poses a significant risk.
