Keep the East Fork Rock Creek Campground open
After careful review of the “Restore East Fork Rock Creek Campground” petition, we, the silent majority of recreational users among this establishment, feel obligated to address the potential repercussions worthy camp-goers will face if this petition were to succeed, and equally concerning, if it is to fail as it currently stands.
While we might see initial compliance from collective restrictions, there are two main reasons why this strategy should be reconsidered. First, it is morally questionable and second, it is unlikely to guarantee a more positive behavior in the long run.
On a more basic level, it is not fair or reasonable to punish or relinquish the rights of one individual for the actions of another.
Second, there is clear evidence that restrictions are not always effective and punitive responses may increase future problematic behavior.
After careful consideration of this petition we acknowledge there are some favorable requests being made, but we also feel it necessary to highlight some additional “risks” that this petition has failed to consider:
- Overnight recreational users migrating to higher areas of the canyon and/or neighboring canyons/areas are going to increase dramatically if these restrictions are placed consequently increasing the risks of catastrophic wildfire emanating from illegal campfires and fireworks in those areas
- ATV use and rubbish (litter) are going to increase dramatically in these neighboring canyons/areas as well
- The mandate to allow only one road into the designated campsites is counterintuitive to the previous concern of emergency responders being able to service these areas
- The likelihood of these requests being met is extremely low which could inevitably lead to the full closure of the campground if there are no alternatives which we fear is going to be the ultimate result of this petition as it currently stands
The area of East Fork Rock Creek has long time been the home of many fond memories and experiences for many individuals and families and we intend for that to continue. It is our intent that the requests in this petition be logically revisited and/or revised to more appropriately ensure that full recreational use of this campground remains with the hope and understanding that this is the true intention of the “Restore East Fork Rock Creek Campground” petition.
These signatures represent the worthy camp-goers and full time recreational users of this campground who respect and appreciate all that it has to offer and who oppose the closure of the East Fork campground. We also oppose the misuse of this campground and support feasible solutions that help preserve this environment. Lastly, we encourage all to do your research regarding the campground and what has actually led to its current state so you can make an informed decision about what you feel should be done to rectify the issues at hand.
