Ever since our first day in the nursing program, we have been looking forward to the tradition of the Capping and Pinning Ceremony. We came into the program with the image of being pinned by the RN's who have inspired us to go into nursing school; this is a very significant and meaningful part of the ceremony that we feel is a necessity. We respectfully request that the nursing faculty repeal their decision to discontinue RNs from pinning their graduate.

Updates

March 4, 2017

The faculty thought they could just erase our traditions without us saying a word. This surge in support proves they were dead wrong and we are not backing down until they put those RNs back on that stage.

We have looked forward to this since we decided to become nurses and to take it away 4 months before we reach that goal is cruel. Please reconsider this decision as we only get to have our pinning ceremony once and it means the world to us and our families.

It broke my heart to have to tell the RN that was my inspiration, that she could not pin me.

Since this has been a long standing tradition in many colleges, there was no reason given to students as to why the change. My sister, a Mastered Nurse who teaches, was looking forward to pinning her Niece. If you are going to change this practice, you should do it with the incoming freshman next year. Your students have worked hard and this has been talked about through thier semesters. It is in poor taste and reflects negatively on GCC to pull this now. Please consider the suggested alternative.

Pinning is such a significant thing, a welcoming into or new careers. This ceremony is something we have looked forward to, planned for and asked someone special to do for us. Someone who has inspired us, supported us, loved us through this process. I cried when I asked my special someone to pin me and through her tears she said its the most honored she's ever felt. I then had to cry as I told her she couldn't pin me because my school changed their rules a few months before we graduated. It's heart breaking to have this honor taken away without even considering how we would feel. If this is going to be the new standard, along with everything else it should be implemented with the first semester students. Please reconsider, and I ask you to put yourselves in our position, you were all here at one point. We can work out the time difference easily, because by now.....we are professional at dealing with crazy schedules. Thank you

Many women decide to become nurses because they have someone who has inspired them. They should be able to have that special pinning.

Why take this away from them? Very rude.

This should have never been discontinued, said these students worked too hard for the school to get rid of it.
