To The Legislative Assembly of Ontario and Toronto City Council:
WHEREAS the City of Toronto has announced up to 20 new homeless shelters to be built by 2033; AND
WHEREAS Toronto City Council has delegated authority to staff to approve and develop new locations for homeless shelters and respite sites; AND
WHEREAS Proposed shelter sites are close to infrastructure utilized by children and seniors; AND
WHEREAS The undersigned believes that dealing with trauma in a way that can harm children or seniors is not harm reduction, it’s harm production.
WE the undersigned petition the Legislative Assembly of Ontario and Toronto City Council to utilize any powers they may have, whether by legislation, regulation, motion, by-law, order, or any other applicable method or mechanism, to (i) prohibit the operation of any homeless shelter or respite site within 500 meters (straight line method) of (a) any school, child-care centre, children’s playground, and (b) seniors home, long-term care facility, or assisted living facility.

I oppose the proposed homeless shelter due to its close proximity to schools and daycares. This location poses a significant concern for the many children who walk to school and play outdoors in our community, and it would fundamentally change our neighborhood's environment.
I am single woman in my early 30s who lives on 66-A Third Street. I have been living by myself since years and I dont want to fear and think about leaving and entering my home. I work until 2 Am and I dont want to be running and opening my door in panic for my safety.
This is the wrong location for a shelter. It should have never been an option. The lot is much smaller than the minimum size guidelines made by Toronto Shelter and Support Services. There are much better locations to place this shelter that won’t be such a burden on communities.
I have a shelter like this next to where I work. There is nothing but problems with drugs, stealing,drinking, litter, destruction of property and homeless encampments in the area and the nearby parks. We do not need one in this location.
Why not put shelters in old industrial building not being used. Running water, electrical, plumbing is all there and usually near a bus route. Don’t put near schools or children/teens or parks . A disaster waiting to happen

The city’s method of designating shelters should be reviewed so that we don’t have a concentration of support facilities in one area. The number 1 criteria should be absolutely no where near schools, daycare centers and I would also add seniors.
