Resurfacing of road at Eastern Avenue, Pinner, HA5
We, the undersigned residents and road users, urgently call upon Harrow Council to prioritize the complete resurfacing of Eastern Avenue, Pinner, HA5. This road has deteriorated to an unacceptable condition specifically from the traffic lights at the intersection of Village Way leading down all the way to the section of the road that intersects with Rodney Close. The surface is completely worn down and numerous cracks are present along the entire road many exceeding 40mm in depth, posing significant risks to motorists, cyclists and pedestrians. These defects create hazardous driving conditions, increasing the likelihood of accidents and vehicle damage. Immediate action is essential to safeguard the safety and well-being of all who rely on this road for travel.
The current state of Eastern Avenue not only endangers road users but is imposing a significant burden on the residents living alongside it. The vibrations caused by vehicles driving over the broken and uneven surface have reached a level of severity that shakes houses along the entire length of the road every time a heavy vehicle drives past. Some residents have reported severe and frequent shaking of their homes, which not only causes discomfort but also raises concerns about potential long-term damage to property foundations and structures. This issue is both urgent and distressing, with residents experiencing daily disruption and a diminished quality of life. A sinkhole recently appeared on an entire section of pavement outside the driveway of one of the residences, emphasising the deterioration of the carriageway. Despite its critical importance, Eastern Avenue has been neglected for far too long and this persistent issue underscores the urgent need for proper repairs and resurfacing.
Eastern Avenue is a distributor road as well as a bus route and yet there has been no action taken over the last 10 years to renew and maintain this specific section of the road. Interestingly, the section of the road further onward from Rodney Close leading all the way to North View (Eastcote High Street) was resurfaced in 2018 implying there was a major structural defect along the entire road that required this extensive work but for unknown reasons leaving the first c.150 metres as-is which is very disappointing. Patchwork repairs have proven insufficient, as potholes and cracks repeatedly resurface, exacerbating the problem.
Despite a long standing complaint raised in 2021, followed up in 2022 and 2023, to both the Network Management (NRSWA) and Highways teams, as well as Harrow Cllrs Chris Mote, Hitesh Karia and Paul Osborn, nothing has been done to date on the basis that the highways inspector stated there are no defects that meets the councils criteria for investigation (in spite of actual physical evidence of the deterioration of the road and impact to the residents). A comprehensive resurfacing of the road is the only effective and lasting solution to restore safety, reduce vibrations, and ensure the road remains serviceable for years to come. Investment in this necessary maintenance will ultimately save resources by eliminating the need for constant temporary fixes.
We urge Harrow Council to act swiftly and allocate the necessary resources to fully resurface Eastern Avenue. The safety, well-being, and quality of life for residents and road users must be a top priority. By addressing this urgent need, the council will demonstrate its commitment to maintaining vital infrastructure and ensuring the safety and comfort of its constituents and prevent further degradation of both the road and surrounding properties, in line with all the public messaging in My Harrow news promoting maintenance of roads in Harrow.
We, the residents and road users, believe this is an essential and justified investment in our community’s wellbeing and future. We respectfully request that this issue be treated with the urgency and seriousness it warrants.
