Respect for DCU Postgrads

To: The President of Dublin City University
Dublin City University Student Union frequently hold events in the “NuBar” and the “Venue”, located directly beside the post graduate residence building at DCU.
These events cause huge disruption to the lives of postgraduate residents at DCU. The noise from the events themselves makes normal life in the post graduate residence building impossible. The last event, the “Christmas Ball”, produced very loud noise from 5:30 p.m. until 2:30 a.m. making it impossible for many residents of the post graduate residence buildings to sleep. However, even after this event ended screaming and shouting went on outside the residence buildings until 5 a.m.
Large events, such as this, are not the only cause of disruption to postgraduate life. During term time, smaller events are held in the NuBar nearly every week night. Large tannoy systems are used at these events, causing extreme discomfort to post graduate residents. While these smaller events usually end around 12:30 a.m. the noise caused by the participants goes on well into the early hours.
We the undersigned request the following:
1. DCU Students Union stop using the “Venue” for events after 9 p.m.
2. Tannoy systems be banned from use within DCU campus.
3. The night security staff at DCU actively police the area outside the post graduate residence buildings, including the entrance to DCU gym, and prevent unruly behaviour that causes so much disruption to post graduate life at DCU.
