I keep refreshing the page because it still feels like a dream but they actually listened and Coach is coming back home to Mizzou. I am completely overwhelmed by how much everyone cared about someone who gave twenty six years of her life to this place and I guess sometimes …

REINSTATE COACH SUZY THOMPSON

Suzy Thompson, or “Coach” to all her athletes, has served as the Head Cheerleading Squad Coordinator at the University of Missouri for the last 26 years. Just this last week Coach Thompson was released from her duties effective immediately because the Department of Athletics had elected to go in a new direction. The University of Missouri was built on the staples of tradition since 1839 and Coach Thompson has built a Division-1 Cheerleading Program on the same values. This petition serves as a voice for YOU and others to express to the Department of Athletics, and the University of Missouri as a whole Coach Thompson IS tradition. We, the signatures and voices on this petition, stand for the reinstatement of Coach Thompson. Mizzou, #MakeItRight.

About Coach Thompson:

Coach Thompson has been a member of the Mizzou family for the last 26 years. She has worked part-time with no benefits; Why? Because she is a true daughter. Walking into Coach Thompson’s office or speaking to her, you can tell she bleeds black and gold. Mizzou pride paints her walls from floor to ceiling. Coach Thompson is a breast cancer survivor. Through her years of obstacles, chemo and radiation treatments, Coach Thompson never let her duty to the Missouri Spirit Organization fall; Why? Because she had a responsibility to her University. In 2015, Coach Thompson was inducted into the Cheerleading: Missouri Sports Hall of Fame.

Mizzou was founded on the four pillars of Respect, Responsibility, Excellence and Discovery. Like Mizzou, Coach Thompson and her program embody the same four pillars.

Respect: Coach Thompson will go above and beyond to connect with each person individually in her program. Whether that is altering her coaching style or even having individual meetings. It’s hard to find a Coach that cares as much as Coach Thompson does. Quite often, I believe the University of Missouri Sprit Squads are overlooked. Without Coach Thompson, we wouldn’t have something so basic like water at out 100+ degree, 4 hours+ football games. Coach Thompson creates the respect we deserve as Athletes… that can barely get water bottles.

Responsibility: Coach Thompson has a responsibility to the University. During the year, you can see the University of Missouri Spirit Squad at home and away football games, basketball, baseball, volleyball, soccer, marketing events, admission, photoshoots and community appearances. She makes it her duty and responsibility to serve almost every event through the University of Missouri no matter how big or small. This is going above and beyond compared to other Spirit Squad Programs.

Excellence: When I think of the word “Excellence,” you think of the feeling of “Pride.” Coach Thompson is proud to be a Missouri tiger, just like all of her athletes. She is proud to be a Coach of a Cheerleading Program built on the foundation of Tradition. The reason tradition isn’t altered is because there is a feeling of pride associated with it. Coach Thompson utilizes excellence every day in her program.

Discovery: As a Coach, Coach Thompson pushes us to discover ourselves. Without a compassionate coach, an athlete’s self-discovery is hindered. Coach Thompson gives her athletes the opportunity to grow and realize their full potential on and off the cheer mat. There have been times where athletes on her team have been in rough places; Whether that has been a death of a parent, failing a class, being overwhelmed, she makes it her personal duty (on her personal time) to help her athletes through it.

Coach is Tradition. Did a University based on tradition, fire tradition herself? Mizzou, #MakeItRight.

The emails are flooding in and honestly it is overwhelming to hear how many lives Coach Thompson touched over these twenty six years. I am currently trying to get a sit down with someone in athletics who will actually listen because the silence from the department is just so loud right now.

We are right on the edge of getting those first hundred names and it feels like the momentum is finally building after the news hit. People are starting to notice this gap in tradition so please blast this link anywhere you can think of because that first milestone really needs to happen tonight.

Interacting with Coach Suzy as a member of Marching Mizzou has always been pleasant and she had always made us feel welcomed and appreciated. Even though she wasn’t our coach, members of the band love her dearly and to fire her like this is wrong.

Suzy was the best coach and mentor I ever had. I had the honor of being on her first MU squad in 1993, and 26 years later is still a powerhouse in the industry. She re-built the MU Cheer program from the ground up and deserves better respect from the MU athletics administration!

Suzy Thompson is Mizzou best ambassador she is a hall of famer Mr Sterk this a disgrace how they have been treated I may be wrong but she is the only one at Mizzou who has won a national championship so much for loyalty make it right Mizzou and reinstate the both. Coaches

I cheered on varsity Suzies first two years at MU. She has had a tremendous impact on my life, forever grateful. Beyond impressed with what she has done with this program, cannot imagine it without her. Please reconsider this decision. Tracy Winchester Coleman

As a father that had a daughter under Coach Suzie’s for 4 years I and shocked and outraged at what the athletic department has done. They never gave a hoot about the cheer team but now seem to be experts on how it should be run. This is a travesty that needs corrected.

She is the best thing for mizzou cheer. She is family and being one of her athletes was the best thing to ever happen to me. She loves cheer, loves mizzou, and most importantly loves all her athletes unconditionally!

My son cheered at MU & I see NO reason for her termination. Maybe they didn’t want to give her retirement benefits or something however, from what I’ve heard, the school hasn’t “restructured” (I’m not sure about that) but, it’s just wrong no matter how you look at it. Period.
