During the first marking period many Vicksburg Virtual teachers made a drastic change in schedule and in most cases doubled their class sizes lumping all students in the district per grade into one virtual classroom. This has put a strain on students and their parents who work from home. Many elementary students and parents were presented with an AM / PM schedule at the beginning of the school year with no more than 3 synchronized hours of teaching four days a week. This schedule has changed to mimic the brick and mortar classrooms and is now a 9 am - 3:30 pm schedule Monday through Friday. Sign this petition if you believe the virtual classrooms should be reduced in student numbers to allow for more individualized learning and with less synchronized hours per week returning the the AM / PM schedule as the district started this school year.

9-330 for a first graders to sit in front of a computer is WAY too long. They really thrived on the 9-12 schedule we had and now they are struggling and beginning to hate school. This is too much for the kids and parents especially if they are working from home or have other small children. Having to send my 3 year old away all day to be by himself in another room because I have to sit with his sisters all day during school is absurd. These kids have maybe a 2-3 minute break between live meets after they finish the work that is to be done asynchronously.

Arbitrary hour requirements should not be the standard for education. Such requirements do not consider the mental health of students and parents. The research is clear that prolonged screen time for both adults and children leads to greater incidents of depression, aggressive behavior, and mental health issues. Please don't allow checking a bureaucratic requirement box dictate the shaper of learning in our community.

Thank you parents for all your comments here. I have been emailing my children's teachers, talking with their principal and emailing both Keevin and all school board members with my concerns. It is evident that they don't like criticism, they don't care about the wellbeing of children or families, and can not give me concrete reasons for the schedule change. In fact, I circled back to the my sons teacher today to ask for specific reasons and said I really want teachers that care that my kids are struggling and hate this schedule change and hate school. She refused to respond and referred me to meet with the superintendent. When there is such a break down in a district that not one employee can respond with empathy there is a chronic system wide problem. I will not stop advocating for better. I look forward to sharing more at the next school board meeting.

This schedule is horrible for the virtual kids, and the large class size negatively impacts the students as well as the teachers. There need to be some changes.

It’s time to reimagine what school should look like for children and their families. A “brick-and-mortar” schedule for students in a virtual setting is an unacceptable solution. Parents and children who opted for the virtual option did so to increase flexibility in these unprecedented times. This drastic and sudden change in schedule robs families and children of much needed flexibility. It’s time to recognize what’s really important this year. Is it covering an arbitrary amount of curriculum? Or, is it about keeping children in this community feeling engaged in their education, feeling supported, and safe in an ever changing world? This change in schedule does not help the students. It does not help parents. Let’s co-create a solution that works. Let’s push back on requirements that don’t make sense given the real situations we find ourselves in.
