The council confirmed today that they are moving forward with the Red Rum tribute plans for Birkdale beach. This victory belongs to every person who signed and pushed to honor his legacy. Keep your eyes on the local council bulletins for the upcoming construction schedule.
Red Rum has never been fully recognised by Southport so we are calling for Birkdale beach to be transformed into a tourist attraction in celebration of Red Rum and his unique record.
Bryan Naylor, a member of The Southport Party, said: "The current bad state of Birkdale beach offers an opportunity to have it restored and made into a profitable new tourist attraction.
"Let us honour a national treasure with a statue and a visitor centre on the beach, where his racing career began and where the seawater cured his lameness.
"Sefton Council have already created a special feature beach at Crosby with the Antony Gormley statues. So why not upgrade Birkdale beach and feature Red Rum and his unbeaten record
So spread the word about the campaign and see if we can pull it off -to give Red Rum his ultimate accolade - to be seen again on the beach where he used to train.
Birkdale beach holds a massive piece of history that deserves much better than its current state. Please email your local councillor today to demand they prioritize this tribute to Red Rum. We need to keep pressure on the council until they acknowledge this opportunity.

About time too. He was a proper legend and should have had a statue years ago

He deserves it more than anyone. My dad told me stories about watching him train on that beach back in the day.

Birkdale beach is a mess these days anyway. This would be a great way to tidy it up and bring people back to the area.

Rummy was the greatest horse ever. Southport needs to stop dragging its feet and show some respect to one of the best.
