Reclaim the Names Petition - Doodoosh (Sugar Loaf) and Aagiiwe'omaak (Hog's Back)
This is a petition that will be submitted to the County of Marquette to officially change the name of Sugar Loaf and Hogs Back to their original Anishinaabe names of Doodoosh (Breast) and Aagiiwe'omaak (Cradle Board Hoop) respectively, along with signage explaining the meaning and history. These are two of the greatest local natural features in the Marquette area and should be recognized by the general public according to their original names.

Reaching this point has been a long and exhausting road that often felt lonely at the start. Seeing this many people acknowledge the history of these lands gives me the strength to keep pushing forward despite the obstacles ahead.

The gift of historical fact is necessary to complete the educational value of the knowledge of this place. I think the oldest known name should be placed where it belongs. It is there in its natural form so let's share its original name with everyone in our time and leave it for all future generations. Lets really be innovative and learn to speak our oldest languages too.
Please return to the original Anishinaabe names. Too much history has been re-written and too many cultures and languages are being lost. The impacts of this is devastating beyond words. The least that can be done is to reclaim that which can be saved.
To use the original indigenous names of ancient landmarks connects us to the ecosystem and an understanding of where we are living. The history and understanding in the aanishnaabe name is too important for our future life on this continent. What do we lose if we do not remember and place this ancient knowledge back into our memory? Change the name!
I support this name change as a show of respect for the original stewards and protectors of this land. And as a step towards recovering at least some of what was lost as a result of the ruthless colonization of this land.
I am very pleased to sign on in support of this name change. As a descendant of European settlers of this region, I feel great sadness at all that has been lost of the beauty, knowledge, and wisdom of those who knew this place best. Returning to the original names of the special places in this area would restore a tiny fragment of all that. And how much more interesting!
