This petition is in direct support of Larry Thompson the Lockport Township High schools boys basketball coach whom prior to this season/school year announced that he would be retiring from teaching with the understanding that he would be welcomed back for another year as the head basketball coach. However, during the last week of the season, Coach Thompson was informed by school administration that he would not be rehired as head basketball coach for the upcoming school year.
This wrongful action has specifically denied him, along with current and former athletes, students and peers with the opportunity to respectfully celebrate his highly successful 30 year legendary coaching career. Furthermore, it should be noted that Coach Thompson is the only coach in the Lock Port's schools history to have top finishes within the State of Illinois High Sports Association's basketball / cross country athletic programs.
Moreover, since the administration failed to give Coach Thompson the proper notice of their intent to move in another direction prior to the start of his final contractual agreement, we feel there is only one fair solution. That solution is to rehire Coach Thompson for his final season which will allow adequate support and a respectful celebration from his former athletes, students, peers and family members.
Therefore, I respectfully encourage everyone to sign this petition in order to show monumental support and appreciation for all of Coach Thompson's dedicated and tireless sacrifices.
Additionally, it should be noted that Coach Thompson is the first and only African American head coach that Lockport has officially hired within any of its athletic programs. In this position, Coach Thomas has made more impact than any other educator within the Fairmont community, as well as within the Lockport high schools history.
Coach Thompson deserves to be retired properly.
