Did you know that Americans use 500 million (500,000,000) straws DAILY (Parker 2018), but only for an average of 20 minutes (1MillionWomen 2017)? The issue with plastic straws is they are used for a short period and then thrown out to last 400 years, for it takes this long amount of time for them to breakdown (Garfield 2018). But, straws don't really decompose they just break down into smaller pieces called microplastics. Which end up in our drinking water and food sources. This is an issue that I believe we can solve, by putting a band on plastic straws. For those that may need them due to a health or disability condition, alternative straws will be provided at businesses in Park Ridge, IL. But I NEED AS MANY SIGNATURES AS POSSIBLE!!! I am speaking at the city hall meeting on March 18th and I need strong evidence that shows that the people of Park Ridge, back up this idea!

I was actually just looking through the recent comments and some of the stories about the local wildlife near the park are really heartbreaking (it honestly makes me think about how much waste is just sitting out there right now). My notes for the city hall speech are getting a bit messy because so many of you keep sending me great ideas for how to handle the alternative straw distribution. It feels like this is finally moving from a weird idea in my head to a real plan that the town has to at least think about.

Thank you, Kirsti, for raising this issue! I will never forget that video of the turtle experiencing a severe nosebleed from the removal of a plastic straw in its nostril. You have my support!
Just switch to paper or metal and be done with it. Seems like common sense to me.
Plastic is everywhere in Park Ridge it drives me nuts. Good luck at city hall!!
My kids see these things washed up on beaches on vacation and ask why we still buy them. Enough is enough.
