Every day 500 million single use plastic straws are discarded in the United States. With our oceans and landfills at capacity with non-biodegradable plastic waste, the time to create change is now. Our future has never depended on our actions more. Please sign this petition if you are a Santa Fe (or surrounding area) resident and would like to see law makers create an ordinance that would require bars and restaurants to carry eco-friendly straw options. Please visit our website at www.strawlesssantafe.com for more information.

I am currently drafting a formal proposal to present to the Santa Fe City Council regarding the proposed straw ordinance. Local business owners have reached out this week to discuss transition timelines and procurement of biodegradable alternatives.

I'm so excited about this! My New Year resolution was to rid my life of single use plastic iteams and straws were #1! I quickly learned it was harder than I though because you can't order a drink without get one even if you ask for "no straw", serves on auto pilot forget sometimes. Its a worth cause and I'm happy to join in!

It can take hundreds of years for a straw to break down. Then it breaks down into toxic pieces. I would completely support a biodegradable option or a complete ban. I saw your announcement in The Reporter and thought this was just great! Thanks for the oppurtunity to contribute!

In my opinion, this could catch on ONLY if the alternative eco friendly straws are cost- effective.

Straws are unnecessary extra plastic and often harm animals once disposed of. Only needed for those with specific disabilities. We can do this, Santa Fe!

My daughter hasn’t been using straws for awhile . And bought a glass straw she keeps in her bag. She taught me and I’m in! The only straws that should be used now should be made from paper, for the sick, elderly, disabled in hospitals , etc. I want to make sure not to shame those that truly need straws to drink comfortably and often.
