The Ontario Safe Streets Act specifically targets the homeless population with its regulations on soliciting. This piece of legislation is harmful because not only does it prevent this marginalized portion of society from one of their last lines of income, but it additionally perpetuates their state of homelessness through ticketing and fining those who are most vulnerable and unable to pay. Introducing the legislation in 2000 was a way of 'managing' homelessness but I propose revising the Ontario Safe Streets Act to prevent the criminalization of homelessness and protect our homeless. The OSSA gives the police even more power than Section 175 (1) of the Criminal Code and the municipal by-laws already allow. This legislation inadvertently fuels a mentality of animosity towards the homeless both in and out of the police sub-culture and effectively "others" the homeless population

people have to eat. fining folks who literally have nothing is just cruel and makes absolutely no sense. stop treating poverty like a crime.
