Please sign to help us stop the build of Tire Aggregate LLC in Brevator Township. Many of the residents in the area have lived here for generations and have enjoyed being outdoors with their families.

Did you know?

The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency has issued a “Public Notice of Intent to Issue Solid Waste” and has made public a draft permit for Tire Aggregate LLC, Cloquet, MN. If issued the permit will allow Tire Aggregate to store and shred 500,000 passenger tire equivalents or 300,000 passenger tire equivalents of tire aggregate. In addition, the site will be able to store up to 50,000 tires that can be sold as recycled tires. The location is approximately 5 miles north of Cloquet…have you traveled over White Pine River? Or perhaps fished trout in this beautiful, designated trout stream? The proposed site is 500-800 feet west of there.

As a community, area residents are equally concerned about the quality of our water and the issue of fire. The Conditional Use Permit issued by the St. Louis County Planning Commission states the water table is approximately 4 feet below the gravel surface the processing facility sits on, perhaps less at times. Although minimum standards are set for reducing the risk of fire, and it appears they are addressed in the draft permit, fire is a real concern when you have large numbers of tires stored in one location. If there was a fire in this location it would obviously be a disaster for the surrounding area.

As community residents we also support the environmentally responsible concept of recycling of tires. What we are opposed to is the location of this facility which is near the water table, close to the St. Louis River, and several area homes. We moved to the country to have a little space, pure water, clean air, beautiful woods and enjoy the area in which we live. Residents oppose the issuance of this permit and believe it should be studied further!

What can you do? Do you have thoughts on the appropriateness of this tire recycling facility? Send them on…the EPA public comment period ends May 16th…you can voice your concerns by writing a letter to:
