Recently, I learned that due to a strained budget and limited resources, Highland Springs HS will be disbanding the College and Career position and it’s resources. I don’t know about many of you but I would not be where I am today if it were not for Mrs. Syble Jennings Pemberton and the College and Career Center; the help with applications, financial aid, providing network opportunities and assisting with all those things that can be daunting with college. The assemblies and college tours, no matter how small everything contributed to my success and schooling!
This petition serves as support of NOT ceasing this resource at the school. Many of us wonder how we can give back. This is your chance.
We’re requesting letters as well to share your experience in high school if you have been helped through the College and Career center.
Success isn’t how far you got, but the distance you traveled from where you started. I started at Highland Springs like many of you. Who would we be without the resource or direction of the College and Career Center? HELP IF YOU CAN. FORWARD to ANYONE YOU KNOW THAT IS INTERESTED OR AFFILIATED WITH HSHS!

I am a first generation black college graduate in my family. I would not have gotten to the college of my choice without the hand of my college advisor. Save this position!
What kind of analysis was done to eliminate the HSHS College and Career Center and its director? It is unwise to eliminate a position without fully assessing the personality of the school, the students, and the community. Losing Syble Pemberton and the assistance she gives to HSHS will create a negative impact that you cannot imagine.
I'm a western Henrico resident who cares about my eastern Henrico neighbors. I support Highland Springs High School College Career Center because I want to see every child given every opportunity to grow and learn to fullest capacity. Schools with fewer college and vocationally educated parents need additional resources to help students connect with post-high school education.
Our motto this year has been “Enroll, enlist, employ” and yet we are literally getting rid of the person who helps our students achieve those goals. Most of our students are first generation college students so they don’t have parents who can help assist in the application process. We are doing them a great disservice by not offering them this assistance through the school. This is a case of how equal does not mean equitable. HSHS needs this!
The east end schools need to keep the college advisor position more than other schools. Henrico County speaks of equity and then they take away the thing our students in the east end need. Students at HSHS are less likely to have parents who have attended college and therefore need more guidance with applications, scholarships, FASFA, and just college decisions in general.
As a future educator it is sickening that our department gets cut before many others that deserve budget cuts....looking at you congress....
Our youth need the Career Center as a resource for positive advancement!!

I owe much of my success to Mrs. Pemberton. I often went to her before my guidance counselor as she guided me in the best direction for colleges and picking my career. There’s was never a time I couldn’t ask her for help with college applications or preparing for the SAT.
