WE NEED YOUR HELP ! Taylor, Tristen and I along with the support of many have been working very hard to try and get the Dogs into the Showman of Showmen Competition as we believe our showman deserves the same opportunities as all other departments. We have jumped thru all the hurdles in an effort to get there. With that being said we have the support of the Junior Fair Board, the Extension Office and many others but we have faced a stumbling block with the Senior Fair Board they have declined and voted it down with no good reason. This is about the kids and embracing change to build bridges and not barriers for all 4H kids past, present, and future.

Updates

May 5, 2014

The refusal from the Senior Fair Board remains a significant hurdle despite the clear support we have received from other organizations. We are currently evaluating our next steps to ensure that our youth participants receive the fair opportunities they deserve. Your continued engagement helps demonstrate that this cause remains a priority for our community.

May 5, 2014

The momentum behind this petition highlights how much our community values equal opportunities for all 4H participants. Your engagement demonstrates that many people recognize the importance of building bridges for the next generation of youth showmen.

I never understood why the dogs were different than all the other animals. It's a shame that adults do not set a better example for children. Excluding entries (kids) is like saying you can come to our club but you are not really a part of it. Sounds like the mean kids group grew up to be senior fair board. I guess they forgot that dogs live on farms too and can be a valuable resource there as well as a faithful companion.

Why if they are required to show an animal and be graded on showmanship they wouldn't be afforded the same experience as the other entries. This is the type of reasoning that has this fair in a dismal stagnant state.

Dogs are being utilized more and more everyday in society. They are being used in the work force and medical field quite often. Experience with dogs is becoming a way of life. I have always said that you can never be first if you always follow. Lets step forward and get the dogs in there.

All 4-H groups should have the opportunity to complete in the Showman of Showmen Competition. I was under the impression that the competition is to find the best showman of all animals. A dog on the farm is no different in keeping under control as a cow, pig, horse, llama, chicken, or any other animal raised on farms. The contest is to highlight the skill, confidence, and execution of the exhibitor in handling and showing a mixture of species other than the one they are representing.

My kids were in tail wagers 4-H club for a total of 20 years. They work just as hard as anyone else in 4-H, and deserve the recognition just as much as anyone else!

Our dog 4-H'er's deserve the same recognition as all other species receive. All other fairs in this area allow dogs to be in Grand Showman of Showmen

If kids are in 4H give them a chance to experience other animals. With the large livestock, as long as the advisors for the first time handler and for the large animal are present to assist the young 4H member, help them understand the nature of the animal, go for it. We support the idea. We need our kids to explore outside their every day experiences.

Please do the right thing here and let the kids and their dogs compete. Think of it this way, what good farm would be without a good daog. They are as much a part of a working farm as cows, sheep, pigs, goats and horses. A Senior Fair Board is expected to show wisdom...so do it.
