Poly has suffered from persistent and reoccurring pool problems for over two years. Since September over a dozen student athletes have gone to the doctor with eye, lung and ear infections. Athletes were forced to leave the natatorium coughing with chlorine poisoning during several practices after only swimming a few laps.

Besides being a major safety hazard, pool closures are unfair. They have forced last years polo girls to play their CIF 'home' game at Milikan. For two weeks during the polo boys season teams had to practice at Cabrillo or on dry land. Lifesaving swim lessons for PE freshmen were also curtailed. Meanwhile, Wilson uses both their school pool and the Olympic shore pool.

Oct 10th the city tested the pool and found it to be safe. Just as before, they couldn't find any specific cause. Speculations suggests it may have had something to do with the Sept-Oct heatwave, or old faulty equipment or human error. Since no cause was identified, and no specific corrective action was taken, I strongly suspect that these problems will occur again in the future.

In November the pool maintenance staff got into an altercation with a coach and left. Remaining staff are filling in temporarily till he returns or is replaced. Chlorine levels remain painfully high. There is no word on the long term staffing solution.

In early December temperatures dropped and we experienced our first big storm on the season. During polo girls Hell Week the pool was tested for chlorine levels again. On a scale of 1-10 (10 being dangerously high) the results were 13. The test was conducted 2 more times with no change. No Hell Week practices or games were canceled. After practice and showering athletes went through bottles of eye drops and still had trouble seeing and doing their homework.

I petition the LBUSD School Board seriously investigate and address this situation.
