Would you like to improve your public speaking skills and learn how to formulate, research, and defend an original idea, policy solution or simply a cause that you are passionate about? If you said yes to either of these questions, I urge you to sign the petition below so we can get a class dedicated to discussing your ideas and the issues that are important to you.
This class isn’t only important for Public Affairs/Political Science majors or those looking to have public service careers and influencing public policy. No matter what your career path is, business, academia, communications, marketing, etc…; being able to present, discuss and defend your own ideas and opinions is a crucial skill that will help you significantly as you embark on your career and beyond. This class will give you the tools you need to be a confident public speaker and the ability to support your ideas whether you’re by the company water cooler, a boardroom, giving a lecture, talking to your client or just with your family and friends.

I have spent the last few afternoons meeting with department heads to discuss how we can integrate this debate curriculum into the current course offerings. The conversations are promising but they need to see how much we truly care about building these communication skills for our own futures.

Seeing this kind of energy for a formal debate space at Baruch proves I am not the only one craving a place to challenge my own ideas. My stomach flips when I think about how many of us are sitting in classrooms wanting to speak up but lacking the right outlet. This momentum is the push we need to show the administration that our voices deserve a dedicated seat at the table.

Cool idea. Being able to defend an argument is something everyone needs to learn before hitting the real world.
I think a class of this caliber would be exceptional for students at Baruch considering many professors and alumni serve in the public sector.
Public speaking is basically the most useful skill you can pick up in college. Wish this was available when I started.
The school really needs more electives like this. Seriously, getting better at presenting ideas is a must for the business world.
This would be so helpful for my major! I hope they actually make this happen.
