The Honorable Edmund Gerald "Jerry" Brown Jr. Governor of California

Dear Governor Brown:

Please do not approve the removal of Father Junipero Serra's statue from the US Capitol's Statuary Hall. Father Serra is a beloved and revered figure to millions of Americans in California and across the nation.

The Blessed Serra will be canonized a saint on September 23, 2015 by Pope Francis I. His statue deserves to remain in Statuary Hall where in has been on display since 1931.

Thank you for your consideration.

The pope is right...it is difficult to judge the past by the criteria of the present.

Please do not remove the statue of Blessed Junifero Serra. If God wishes him to be a saint, who are we to reject. We are all sinners.

He was a man who cared deeply for the civil rights of the native population. Please keep this beautiful statue in honor of this heroic figure.

We must protect the history of California. Fr. Serra has earned his place in history. Please do not give into the haters. We have rights too.

Don't let the fleeting orthodoxies of the present day wipe out memory of the past. That is too much like 1984!
