According to Currituck County as of March 20, 2020 at 10:00 pm access to the Outer Banks communities in Corolla and the 4WD area is denied to visitors and non-resident property owners. Given what we have seen, we are concerned that the restrictions are not being fully enforced and some shuttles have been operating across the sound to bring people to the off road against the orders that are in place.
We appreciate the leadership of Currituck's Board of Commissioner to put in place restrictions to limit exposure to covid-19 in this unprecedented time. We are concerned that some visitors are not taking this seriously and ask for additional help to limit the spread of the virus in our community. Our off-road community is small and is the main point of contact for anyone who may fall ill, for cleaning and maintenance on rental homes and second homes, for anyone stuck in the sand. We also know that we are not ready up for summer volume to provide safety on the beach strand or back roads. We appreciated the effort this past weekend to limit day trippers. We can not say no to helping others if they get sick or need maintenance or have other issues.
We request that the BOC enforce restrictions in the off road to stop traffic in our communities. We have seen new cars from other states in the off road in the past three days with several more driving up the beach today. We understand that travel is restricted, but we also have seen an increase in our areas.
We realize this may hurt our livelihoods in the off road--and we are the most dependent on that livelihood. We appreciate the hard calls that the county has to make and we stand behind our county and offer our support in this difficult time.
The decision to sign this petition was made for many reasons. We need to understand that the people coming from out town are coming to houses that do not have much if any supplies on hand. They are mostly rental houses that have been sitting empty since fall. There are many home owners that came down weeks ago and have been able to plan and isolate themselves prior to the stay at home order that has now been issued by the state. The community on this beach is made up of people that are in the at risk age range therefore vulnerable. I and many others are concerned about how this will effect our economy since it is seasonally driven but I’m confident that most value health safety over monetary gain.
