After child care regulation changes, it is the intention of the UGDSB
to cancel the long running Teddy Bear Playschool Program at ODSS run
by Gina Brusch. This program has provided ODSS students with an
incredible opportunity to interact and work with preschool aged
children one on one. These young adults are not only learning life
skills that will help make them better and more responsible
contributing members of society, it is also a hands-on experience
working with children at a time when they must make difficult
decisions about their own future education, occupation and life
choices.
Under the guidance of an incredibly
compassionate and experienced mentor like Gina Brusch this program
not only provides the high school students with an immeasurable life
experience, it also provides the preschoolers with an exceptional
level of care and attention in a safe and fun environment.
This program has run for over 30 years
with a flawless safety rating. To cancel it would be a huge
disservice to the ODSS students, the preschoolers and the parents and
community of Orangeville. Teddy Bear Playschool offers young and
single wage earning families with an opportunity to place their child
in a preschool setting at a price that is affordable.
We ask that the UGDSB please consider the options of hiring an ECE and attaining the CCEYA certification and raising the yearly fee or apply for an exemption to the CCEYA to allow this great program to continue as an alternative to canceling the program.
If you are interested in writing a letter of support to the UGDSB or joining us for the delegation at the UGDSB meeting in Guelph on February 7th please email me at [email protected].
Thanks for your support!

Please do not cancel this very worthwhile programme at ODSS and was a former student of Gina Brush and the Teddy Bear Playschool.. My daughter took this class in High School and went on to Humber College and received her RECE, and loves working in this field.
This program is an amazing benefit to the future of our youth. And it would be a shame to let it go without a fight! I was a part of it when I was in high school at odds and formed a life long friendship with my little buddy that I still have to this day! Please reconsider!!!!
Why would anyone want to cancel a program that benefits these two age groups as well as low income families. Perhaps the money planners should take a long look at what they are doing and think of the good of the community instead of what looks good
It's a vital and unique service for teen mothers in that area. Becoming a teen mom is hard enough but having a program in which you can finish your education and ensure your child is safe takes a little stress out of their lives.
As a RECE and a former student at ODSS who was very involved in the Teddy Bear program, I believe that it should continue. The children love their big buddies. They are able to develop relationships that they can't form in a normal centre with other Children or their teachers.
This is an amazing program. We have had all three of our children attend. With out a doubt it was a crucial element to their social developments.
Please save this wonderful educational opportunity for preschool and high school students!

I was relying on registering my daughter for this programme. She would otherwise not have the opportunity to be in a child care center and learn the skills and to prepare her for junior kindergarten in a group setting with other kids her age.
