We, concerned residents of the anachronistically named Plantation community in Venice, Florida, are petitioning the PMA board to include a name change proposal on its next ballot. We feel that the name Plantation evokes a cruel and shameful period in our nation's history. Further, we feel that changing the name would make our community a more welcoming and friendly place for all prospective residents regardless of race, heritage or color.

The PMA board continues to ignore our emails while they hide behind tradition to justify keeping a name steeped in human suffering. Their silence is a calculated insult to every resident who refuses to normalize this history. We are not going away until they bring this to a vote.

The PMA board can no longer pretend this is just a fringe concern. We have built genuine momentum and forced them to look at the rot in our community name.

IT IS 2020 PEOPLE. CHANGE THE NAME ALREADY.
Yes!! I have been waiting for someone to bring this up. It makes me so uncomfortable every time I say where I live.
Living here for 15 years and it has always bothered me. Time to move on and be better.
Are we really still hung up on a name? It is just a word. Focus on the real issues in the neighborhood like the road paving.
It is just not a good look for Venice. We can do better than this.
