To Nick Smith, Susan Pile and Robert Burke,
We the aforementioned student staff of Pierpont Commons would like to address safety concerns while working nighttime shifts. We have had several suspicious and potentially dangerous members of the public come into the building with no way to screen or prevent hazardous encounters. We have had CIC Desk employees repeatedly harassed or made uncomfortable by repeat offenders in the building. Trapped behind the desk, it is been made clear that they feel uncomfortable calling Building Managers or DPSS for fear of the person having a violent reaction. We would like to petition for a postponement of the 2am closing time until the following procedures are put in place:
- M-Card Readers on all exterior doors and a replacement of exterior doors. Pierpont is the only building in the surrounding area that does not have M-Card Readers installed. The League does not permit access without an M-Card past 12am and the Union will also have M-Card Reader’s installed restricting access to the students only. The doors are very old and have manual locking mechanisms that regularly malfunction. Custodians have frequently encountered people that were entering the building after closing time when the student staff have left.
- Comprehensive safety guidelines and procedures for all night-time staff (Building Managers, CIC Employees, Custodians). We have had instances come up where Building Managers were not aware of CIC safety guidelines which prolonged potentially hazardous interactions.
- A regular DPSS presence in or around the building between the hours of 12am-2am. In instances where DPSS has needed to be called, it has taken as long as 35 minutes for officers to arrive. DPSS has an office in the building that should be utilized to ensure student safety.
We would like to make clear that we DO NOT feel safe in the building after hours. The implementation of this early morning closing time without comprehensive safety measures in place is completely unacceptable. We implore you postpone the 2am close time until these requests have been met.
Sincerely,
The Student Staff of Pierpont Commons.
As a female staff who works many late nights I would feel much safer if we had a safer door system after hours
