As residents of Phillippi Gardens we are concerned of the constant speeding and heavy traffic through our neighborhood on Constitution Blvd and Britannia Rd. The cars and heavy trucks speeding through our neighborhood are putting us and most of all our children at constant risk. It is almost impossible to retrieve mail or cross the street but most of all our children are not free to go outside due to the imminent danger of being stuck by a speeding car. Most drivers speeding through are also distracted by the cell phones, eating or music blasting showing no care for safety.

It is not acceptable that a residential street have a speed limit of 30 mph and that trucks are allowed to drive through. Small accidents occur everyday but are not reported by the drivers as they are at fault. Shrubs, poles, mailboxes are often hit and knocked over due to speeding.

We have asked Sarasota County to intervene several times to protect its residents but have always been turned down.

We demand Sarasota County put in traffic calming measures to guarantee the safety of its residents and most of all our children.

Updates

April 25, 2018

I have been spending my evenings documenting the latest near misses on Constitution Blvd to build a concrete file for the county. Seeing the community photos of damaged mailboxes and broken curbs proves that we cannot wait for a bigger tragedy to finally take action.

April 25, 2018

Seeing this kind of movement confirms that my neighbors are just as tired of living in fear for our children as I am. We have finally forced the county to acknowledge that these streets are not a shortcut for distracted drivers. I am heading to the next planning meeting to make sure they see these names and understand we are not going anywhere.

The problem could easily be amerliorated with speed bumps or additional stop signs. The fact that there is a Pre-K on the Swift end of Constitution should make this issue all the more urgent for the county. Dropping off and picking up children there is an accident (and a lawsuit) waiting to happen. An ounce of prevention............

Calming bumps would be a great safety step. Cars are going 40 to 45 miles an hour since the road was repaved. There are more children playing near the Road

The constant speeding in our neighbor hood is a tremendous danger to all who live in this once quiet community. The cut through traffic is evident and a great danger to all, something terrible will eventually happen if something isn't done.

Speed bumps would be a nice deterrent to keep our kids safe.

I hope this works!!! Been dealing with the same issues off of Riverwood Ave (south of Proctor)...people use it as a through street and drive at ridiculous speed!!! County will not give us speed bumps even though they are on the north end of Riverwood!??:(
