It is our sincere hope as citizens of the United States of America that you will act on behalf of the best interests of us as your constituents by arguing and, ultimately, voting in favor of the “African American Burial Grounds Network Act” currently moving through the legislative process. The purpose of this Bill introduced by Representatives A. Donald McEachin and Alma S. Adams.
1. Create a voluntary national network of historic African-American burial grounds, and would provide information, technical support, and grants to aid in the research, identification, preservation, and restoration of burial sites within the network.
2. Provide federal support for historic African-American burial grounds in need of assistance to ensure their preservation for future generations.
I and most of my fellow residents have appreciated the integrity and conviction of your generosity towards the Historically Black Colleges and Universities. In our efforts to improve our communities by identifying and preserving neglected and abandoned cemeteries, we are asking that you courageously vote in favor of this legislation that will provide financial support to make these properties green spaces for everyone to enjoy. We are confident that with the support of forward-thinking public servants like you, we can work toward balanced, long-term solutions to preserving this vital component of African American History and genealogy.
