To the Mayor and City Council of Brevard, NC

We, the undersigned citizens of Brevard, NC, say a resounding "No!" to the proposed West Loop Corridor due to the irreversible negative impacts it would have on our city and our communities.

The proposed project would destroy historic properties, take private residences, impact the environment, devalue properties and endanger vulnerable populations by diverting almost 10,000 cars and trucks through quiet residential neighborhoods and past the Brevard Middle School and the Brevard Rescue Squad. The proposed project funding would have the North Carolina Department of Transportation pay for the land, the construction and the maintenance of the Corridor - essentially creating a new state highway where none exists and ceding local jurisdiction to the State.

While we say "No!" to the West Loop Corridor, we say "Yes!" to exploring low cost, environmentally sound and practical solutions such as first building the 'east bypass' and analyzing the effects; exploring additional one-way streets in the downtown area; and a robust bus system that actually removes vehicles from the road instead of diverting them and makes mobility easier and safer for seniors and students.

Updates

October 23, 2016

I have spent this week drafting formal inquiries to the City Council requesting a detailed breakdown of the proposed land acquisition process. A representative from a local news outlet contacted me today regarding the environmental impact concerns we outlined. I am currently preparing the documentation to support our arguments for the alternative traffic solutions.

The growth of this movement has caught the attention of the local planning commission. We are currently preparing a formal letter to submit to the city council that details the specific environmental concerns outlined in our proposal.

I couldn't think of a more ridiculous way to use tax payers money than the construction of this "convenient" by pass. Brevard/DOT should use this money to beef up the infrastructure that is already in place instead of their consistent patch work jobs that last about as long as the time it takes to temporarily "fix."

Where do they think the elderly people on fixed incomes in the neighborhood around Fisher are supposed to move?

I own the home on the corner of Railroad Ave and McLean, I am losing the house to the bike path. We have fought this for years. The city will not listen to any concerns. They don't want to help

What's wrong with the way it is? It seems that DOT is determined to destroy downtown and be motivated by a few malcontents who are always in a big hurry and obviously don't belong in a small sweet town like Brevard. Isn't the mess of our downtown streets enough already?

Brevard is special please do not turn it into "anywhere USA". Let us focus on public transit and better using the infrastructure that we already have.

This is a totally unnecessary project and a waste of taxpayer dollars. There are many other solutions to this perceived problem.
